WE ARE OFF TO A GREAT START!
8TH GRADE ENGLISH
We are working on The Elements and Devices of Literature Unit. This unit is comprised of fiction, nonfiction, drama and poetry. We will be using our texts to provide examples of how these elements and devices are used in literature. This unit focuses heavily on the terms associated with literature, therefore a great deal of time is spent on understanding usage. Students may find this unit a bit tedious, but it is necessary, as we will be applying these terms to future literary units. We are building a foundation for literary analysis. We are also developing study skills that reach across all disciplines. Memorization is an active skill that students must learn - each student is encouraged to find what method works best for them. I encourage parents / guardians to help in this process. For this unit, we will have weekly cumulative tests - as the material increases, so does the point value. Each test will require students to create a mandatory study guide. Students are required to take notes during class, I realize that for some, this may be difficult, therefore copies are available to students who are struggling - *with conditions: 1. an attempt at note taking must be made; 2. these are to be copied into the student's notebook - a proven method of increasing memorization 3. student must advocate for themselves. (* unless IEP / 504 accommodation) Each student is given every opportunity to be successful - retakes and reviews are given on every test, but once again, student must advocate for themselves - please encourage them to do so.
I look forward to a great year!
