Vocabulary Art Student should know
· juxtaposition -- The conscious positioning or arranging of objects.
· proactive -- to take initative.
· Golden Mean-- Rooted in Greek mathematics, the Golden Mean is a study of perfect ratio of one area in proportion to another. This would meam 1 to 1.6.
· aesthetic--Relating to standards of beauty and art.
· color-- The element of art that is derived from reflected light.
· complementary colors--Colors which appear opposite one another on a color wheel. When placed next to one another, complementary colors are intensified and often appear to vibrate. When mixed, brown or gray is created.
· analogous colors -- Any set of three or five adjacent or neighboring colors of the color wheel. An example of such a set would include blue, blue-green, green - or- blue, blue-green, green, yellow-green, yellow. Because each set of colors shares similar colors, there is a harmony to analogous colors.
· composition--In the visual arts, the structure or organization of a work.
· harmony -- The principle of design that creates unity and harmony by stressing separate but related parts. Repetition is one example of a way that harmony is achieved.
· focal point -- A specific area, element or principle that dominates a work of srt. The viewer's eye is usually drawn there first.
· foreground -- The area of a painting or drawing, usually located near the bottom third of a work, that represents the space "closest" to the viewer.
· background-- In a painting or drawing, the area that seem most distant, as if in the back of the picture. Often this is referred to as negative space.
· ceramics-- The art of making objects such as pottery out of clay. This term is used to decribe these objects as well.
· kiln -- A commercially produced oven designed to each very high temperatures. Kilns are used to fire ceramics.
· firing -- An extremely high temperature baking process used to harden ceramic works. This is usually done in a kiln or by building extremely hot, smoldering fires in the ground around clay works.
· kinetic art -- Art that utilizes movement.
· mandala -- A symbolic circular design.
· collaboration--To work together in an artistic undertaking.
· collage--From the French word "coller" which means "to paste". A collage is any artistic composition made by gluing assorted materials to a flat surface.
· assemblage--A three-dimensional collage created from a group of everyday objects, many times pre-made and put together in a specific way.
Very Important Vocabuary for Quizzes
Color Theory is a color system used to show color harmonies.
Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel.
Secondary colors are green, orange, violet.
Primary Colors cannot be made, they are the basic colors - red, blue, yellow.
Intermediate Colors are mixed analogous colors, i.e. red mixed with violet, creates red-violet.
Analogous Colors are 2 or 3 colors next to each other on the color wheel.
Warm colors are red, orange, yellow.
Atmospheric perspective is where objects fades into the distance, get smaller, and have less detail as they go up the page…into the distant space.
Tertiary colors are Intermediate Colors, i.e. yellow-orange, red-violet, blue-green
Shade is a dark values of a color.
Tint light values of a color.
Portrait a work of art about a person
Local Color is the basic color of something, like green grass, blue sky
Mood in a painting can be created by using neutrals, grays, browns to show rain and saddness, warm colors to show sunshine and happiness.
Color Wheel shows how visual colors are related to each other in different harmonies.
Depth is the illusion of space that can be created using color, line, shape.
Model - a person posing for work of art
Plein Air - painting outdoors in French.
Cool colors - blue, green, violet
Focal - the point that is the center of interest
Golden - the name of the rectangle which uses a ratio of 1 to 1.618
Linear -a kind of perspective that uses a mathematical system to show depth logically and consistently
Symbolism -using color to stand for something else, when green means go & red stop.
Neutrals - black, gray, whites
Cast shadow - grounds an object with line
Shadows - used in a drawing or painting to show the direction of the light source.
3D – to create this illusion you would use three values: light, middle, & dark.
One point perspective - when the viewer sees the front of the block as a rectangle.
Two point perspective - when the viewer sees the corner of the block
