By 1900 hay was easier to cut. In the 1900's the scythe had a sharper blade and a longer base. The scythe even came with handles for your hands to grip onto. There was a regular scythe and a mowing scythe. The mowing scythe was used for tough straw and wheat. The regular scythe was used for grass-type wheat and straw.
