Harnessing Equipment in the 1800s
Ever heard of the Ox Yoke? It was the harnessing equipment farmers used in 1800! They were used in Hadley and many other places to hitch oxen to equipment (usually a cart or plough). It was useful, but the oxen suffered because the cruel device dug into their skin because the ox yoke was thin. The Ox Yoke was made of oak and other strong woods. They were also always about 4ft. wide to keep 2 oxen close together. It was as easy to herd 2 oxen around town as herding 1 ox because they were very close together so they couldn't go their separate ways. ![]() |
